Three series, all concerned with knowledge that exists in manuscript, in speech, or in practice, and with making it usable by scholars and by the communities it came from.
Critical editions of Bugis and Makassarese manuscripts. A volume in this series presents the Lontara text transliterated, a translation into Indonesian or English or both, and the apparatus a reader needs to work with it: description of the witnesses, account of variants, glossary, and commentary on the content.
We are particularly interested in genres that have received little attention — medical, agricultural, navigational and genealogical texts — and in manuscripts held in private and family collections rather than institutional ones.
Monographs and edited volumes on bodies of knowledge held in manuscript, in oral tradition, or in continuing practice. Work in this series may be historical, ethnographic, linguistic or interdisciplinary, and need not be text-based.
Research involving communities must document free, prior and informed consent, and we expect community collaborators who contribute substantively to be named as authors rather than acknowledged.
Grammars, lexicons, orthographic and pedagogical materials, and studies of how knowledge was taught and transmitted before and alongside formal schooling. This series includes practical materials intended for use in classrooms and by communities, not only research monographs.
We publish in English, in Indonesian, and in bilingual editions. Where a volume presents Bugis or Makassarese text, that text appears in Lontara script alongside romanised transliteration.
We do not reject work on the quality of its English. If the scholarship is sound and the writing needs attention, we will say so and help at the editing stage.
